Be prepared before emergencies happen:
10 things you must do right now.
#1: Halter and Lead Rope for EVERY horse/equine on your property
#2: Horse First Aid Kit
#3: Identification on all equines (i.e.: Fetlock ID bands, horse ID collars, Rescue Facts on the halter, etc.)
#4: Truck (with gas) and Trailer in safe, working order
#5: Vaccination records and Proof of ownership (i.e.: Bill of sale, coggins, veterinary confirmation or other)
#6: Directions to and phone numbers for equine evacuation centers or host properties
#7: Flashlights with extra batteries
#8: 7/14 day supply of hay/feed & water * ALL supplements & medications
#9: Secondary contact information (i.e.: relatives out of the area, veterinarian, etc.)
#10: Current pictures of your animals in case they are removed from your property while you are not at home, preferably with you in the picture as well.
BONUS: Phone numbers for local Animal Control/Equine Evacuation Teams; in the event you are unable to evacuate animals yourself. Contact them with vital information: your address, number of animals and accessibility to your property.
Know which Radio Stations in Your Area to tune into for up-to-date Road Closures and Evacuation areas. Download a weather app to your cell phone from a local television station in your area.
Have a written Evacuation/disaster plan (in view for all if you are a boarding facility) with Each animal having a Stall Card to grab & go.
Make sure ALL your animals will load in any trailer!
